Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the activities of the European project Walk the Global Walk, which involved until this year direct interactions between students and local communities to promote the Sustainable Development Goal no. 13 - Climate Action, have moved into the online environment.
This is also the case of the winter school in Romania, organized in partnership by the Association of Assistance and Programs for Sustainable Development - Agenda 21 and Bucharest City Hall, which took place during 6 hours of online debates, on November 24 and 25 this year, and brought together over 40 participants, students ambassadors and distinguished guests in the field of public environmental policy, specialists in climate change and meteorology, civil society activists, along with representatives of local authorities in Bucharest.
In the interactive team games played in online video system, the ambassador students had the opportunity to effectively discuss the issue of climate change, the topics aimed at identifying solutions to strengthen resilience to climate risks and natural disasters of world wide states, integration measures on climate change in national policies, strategies and planning, improving education, awareness and human and institutional capacity for climate change mitigation, adaptation and early warning, implementation of the commitment of developed countries to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The event benefited from the presence of PhD. Elena Mateescu, General Director of the National Meteorological Administration, Adriana Zaharia, development and public policy expert, Fatma Yilmaz, coordinator of the Strategies Department of the City Hall of District 1. We were joined by colleagues from the Durable Development Association - ViitorPlus and from the Pachamama Romania Association, 2 national organizations recognized for their dedication to the issue of sustainability in Romania.
Stimulated by the virtual frame of expression, the ambassador students overcame their emotions and asked many clarification questions to our guests, the dialogue being extremely dynamic.
Demonstrating great maturity in thinking, the students stated in unison their determination to get involved at community level in saving the planet, in this sense attracting our attention the statement of one of the students - Alexandra V. saying that "future is impossible if we don't act now".
We remind you that the Walk the Global Walk project is funded by the DEAR program - the Program for developing education and raising awareness, initiated by the European Commission, and brings together students from 12 schools in Bucharest.
